Timing chain tensioner replacement |
(starting at left going right) Tensioner gasket, oil filter, tensioner soaking in oil, penzoil 5w-30. |
Top view of the tensioner sitting in oil. |
Oil filter taken out, tensioner ready to be taken out. In my case, it was harder to get out because of the A/C lines. |

Closer view of the tensioner, ready to be taken out. |

Tensioner comparison, the old one (on the left) has less thickness than the new one. The gasket was also a different design. |
Tensioner out, empty hole. |
New tensioner in place, make sure the locking arm is engaged and the plunger is totally in before you put it in place, or it will not go all the way in. |

Nuts installed (i didn't use a torque wrench, a socket was hard enough to get in there, just be careful not to break the stud), oil filter installed, now disconnect the coil wire, crank over the engine a few times to build oil pressure, then quickly re-connect the coil wire and start the engine. The same "mad cricket" sound will be heard, but 10 times worse. I also had it happen on 1 or 2 more start ups, but its totally quiet now! Major improvement! |
